Accommodation Star Rating System Explained

Bullanginya Lodge has a three and a half star rating, but we find many of our guests don’t know what this means. So, what do accommodation star ratings in Australia mean? Put simply, star ratings give guests an indication of the quality of the accommodation. There are many criteria that are assessed, but generally speaking, a star rating assesses the cleanliness, security, service, quality and physical attributes of the accommodation. Value for money is also considered.

Star Ratings & Accommodation Categories
There are 6 broad accommodation categories to which star ratings are awarded:

• Motels
• Hotels
• Caravan-Holiday Parks
• Self Catering properties
• Serviced Apartments
• Hosted Accommodation

It is important to remember that categories shouldn’t be compared against one another. For example, a 3-star rated caravan park shouldn’t be compared with a motel with the same rating.

NRMA Star Ratings

The NRMA accommodation star rating system is applicable to establishments in NSW. Properties in other states are assessed by their State-specific motoring club standards.

A 3 star motel like Bullanginya lodge can be defined as:

“Good standards; well appointed, with comfortable furnishings and facilities”

The half star means we have more features and a higher standard than the category standard.
